1)
|
Include
an alternate text for each graphic. This lets you read what the

|
2) |
All graphics files should be located in a separate subdirectory called "graphics" or "images". A relative link would look like this: <img src="../Images/kc_sm.gif" alt="Kahl Consultants"> |
| 3) |
Meta tags: Give AUTHOR, TITLE, DESCRIPTION, and KEYWORDS tags with each html file. |
| 4) |
At the bottom of each page that is longer than the screen put an icon |
| 5) |
Always put a menu at the top of a long page with links to the sections. This lets visitors scroll down quicker. |
| 6) |
Never show a graphic on the screen smaller than the actual file size. Either show it in it's full size or edit the graphic to make it smaller. |
| 7) |
Never use file names with spaces in them. Always use underscore ( _ ) instead of spaces or dashes ( - ). |
| 8) |
DO use Tables to arrange your work unless you are using CSS. Never put the entire page or large portions of it in one table. If you do this then the user has to wait for everything to download before they can see anything. Split up the page into several tables. One suggestion
is to separate the pages into 3 equally wide tables: |
| 9) |
Use Black type unless it is a special note/warning - this
can be any of the 216 browser safe colors that you like, as long as it
does not clash with the background. |
| 10) |
Try use Arial/Helvetica or Times New Roman font for text, Verdana is also good |
| 11) |
Avoid fFrames. Bad practice! Use only for displaying a large number of similar items. |
| 12) |
Don't link to images that are not on the server. |
| 13) | Links to
any other website should open in a new window; use the tag target="new" and add a note "all links open in new window" |
| 14) | Business sites should use white or similar backgrounds of uniform color. No obtrusive background images. |
| 15) | Dial up modems will be with common for many more years. Download time is a very important factor so code accordingly - keep image size and overall page size small. |
| 16) | These are just guidelines. Rules are meant to be broken. |
