KC
News 10/99 Island Special
Vol.1, No.10
Last month I got lucky - no, not like that, silly! I spent a wonderful
week on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. No laptop, no phone, no TV! So this
KC News comes to you with island feeling - even if you are in a NYC cubicle,
you are still on an island, one known as planet earth.

Y2K
Last month we presented the Kahl
Consultants Y2K website:
http://www.kahl.net/y2k
Today let's look how the Millenium Bug is treated by islanders. While
on Kauai we came across posters that read:
Mayor Kusaka wants you to plant a "Y2K-Garden"
The Y2K computer bug may affect our imported food supplies, so start
a vegetable garden today! Plant fast-producing, long-growing vegetables
such as kale, spinach, cherry tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. Plant edible
hibiscus - it grows fast and needs no care. Plant lots of banana and papaya
trees. Fertilize your soil. Talk to experts.
What is so interesting about this message? It really applies to all
of us - it is sound advice reminding us that we are too reliant for our
survival (food, energy, water) on our society. Although the mdeia misrepresentation
of the Y2K issue will likely cause more problems than the computer bug
itself, it is never wrong to prepare for disaster, be it a computer malfunction
or a natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane or drought.

TIP OF THE MONTH
Organize or Drown
Small island states are especially vulnerable to rising sea levels that
could result from global warming. Tiny countries like Micronesia and Kiribati
are very worried that their countries may drown sometime in the next century,
and are busy lobbying at the UN to reduce global warming.
We all drown in our own work all too often, trying to keep up with emails,
voice mails, and deadlines. Get help - get yourself a PIM! A PIM is a Personal
Information Manager. The Lotus Organizer is our preferred PIM, others use
Microsoft Outlook or one of the many hand help PIM devices, such as the
Palm Pilot.
Lotus Organizer is the world's leading PIM - over 42 million users.
It looks and works like a manual planner - with tabs and pages that turn!
Schedule appointments, manage contacts, make to-do lists, keep notes, and
share calendars. Organizer works with the internet and hand-held devices
(Palm III, PalmPilot, Windows CE).

SITES FOR SORE EYES
VCR Fixer
Last month i recommended the VCR Fixer site know as "The Self Service
Website" at:
http://www.fixer.com
Just my luck, my VCR decided to break down on me so I could test this
site myself! and here is what i found...
First i looked up my make and model in their extensive database - sure
enough, it was in there, a goldstar GVR-C455. quick, bookmark that page!
next, i read through their Symptoms and Repair Tips. Then i learned how
to deal with tapes that will not eject. Great stuff, now I'm ready to go
play Mr Fixit. Next month I'll tell you how i did!

WinTips
TURN
OFF MENU AND WINDOW ANIMATION
Win98 menus and windows don't just appear, they ROLL onto the screen. Test
this: right-click the desktop or select a minimized Taskbar item to restore
it. Fancy, eh? These special effects are fun at first, but only dizzying
after that.
Turn them off! Right-click the desktop, select Properties, and click
the Effects tab. Deselect Animate Windows, Menus And Lists, then click
Apply or OK.

!!Hoax & Virus Alert!!
Many of Hawaii's plants and animals are in danger of extinction. Even
the the state bird and state flower! Hawaii is less than 1% of the USA's
land mass, but has more than 30% of the threatened or endangered species.
Your computer may be in danger of extinction if you don't keep it tuned
up and innoculated. Use a program like Norton System Works (now available
for less than $50) and ALWAYS make regular backups of your work. I warned
you!!
And remember, all the latest info on viruses and hoax emails are here:

NetTips
MAKE
YOUR SITE INTERACTIVE
Advice for readers with their own websites or those interested in setting
up their own site. Seems like everything is free on the web these days
- free internet from AltaVista.com, free computers from microworkz.com
and on and on!
There is plenty of free stuff available for your website. Freebie scripts
and services make tuning up your website easier. But the easy stuff usually
comes with strings attached. Drawbacks include: spamming your users, harvesting
data, sending out advertising.
So be careful what you use on your website! The best free stuff comes
with no strings attached, But then you usually need some working knowledge
of coding to use it. Dig in:

Go hug a tree or read a good book. Thanks for your comments.

THE PUNCH LINE
Last month Ford Motor Co. agreed to make enforcement of sexual harassment
policies a criteria in their supervisor evaluations. This comes as part
of the company's $7.5 million sexual-harassment settlement. Supervisors
across America take note: How well you promote and enforce your company's
sexual-harassment policy could soon impact whether you get that next raise
or promotion!
The Fine Print
* CTRL: Control Key (there are 2 of these on your pretty
little keyboard)
* ESC: Escape key (top left of your keyboard)
* Home & End Keys: found next to the Page Up and
Page Down keys, to the
right of the alphanumeric portion of your keyboard (even
on laptops)
* Keyboard combinations: hold down the first key, then
press second key shortly
