Y2K

Everybody is talking about it, some are doing something about it. We want to give you tips on how to deal with the bug of the century.

Quick recap: The Year 2000 "bug" can cause computers to read the year 2000 as 1900, since most older computers were programmed to only read a two digit year date. That bug could cause machines to transmit erroneous information and even crash.

Windows users: if you are using windows 3.x or windows 95 you will encounter problems. Microsoft calls these operating systems "compliant with minor issues".

See their website for the gory details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/topics/year2k/default.htm

Bottom line: maybe 1999 is a good time to plan an upgrade. Kahl Consultants recently upgraded to Win98, and it is not too painful if you are well prepared. Win 98 is no panacea, but is touted as Y2K compliant. We can only hope.

Do You Like Spam in A Can?
======================

The official name is Unsolicited Commercial Email, or UCE, to the acronym police. You probably know it as spam. It's Junk Email - a plague worse than death to some. Well now any spam that lands in your can, I mean inbox, can be whisked away into never never land thanks to a new U.S. law. All unsolicited email are supposed to have a notice in the subject line that let the recipient know they have received unsolicited mail. Some of the acronyms used:
"ADV:", "(UCE)"

So, how does that help us? Well if you have an email software that can filter emails (such as the Netscape Messenger) then all you need to do is create a filter that throws all emails with those dead giveaway acronyms straight into your trash. this may not eliminate all spam but it sure will help!

The steps to follow with Netscape (other software may have similar steps):
1) go into Messenger and select "Edit" from your pull down menu
2) select "Message Filters"
3) click "New" and fill in the appropriate blanks
4) fill in that the subject contains "ADV:" and then click "More" and
enter or subject contains "(UCE)"

Alex
