WORD OF THE MONTH
===================
DiVX ;-)
~~~~~~
What if i told you you could get your all-time favorite movie over
the net - rather than at the video store? Sounds exciting, huh? Read on...
MAYBE you heard about the original DiVX - that failed out DVD rental plan. This is not it. DiVX ;-) is a new software technology that uses the same name - with a smiley attached to it. Based on MPG4 it offers superior image and sound compression based on MPEG4. Yes, it can compress digital video. So you can fit a DVD on a CD! Which means that downloading entire movies with a broadband connection will take less than an hour instead of days.
An update to Divx ;-) is on it's way. Named Divx ;-) Deux or Project Mayo it could do for movies what NAPSTER did for music. It is the future standard for internet video. The software could allow studios -- or anyone else -- to distribute DVD-quality videos in digital form over the net. Call it the MP3 of video!
WHALE OF AN EMAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most EMAIL ATTACHMENTS are limited in size. Depending on who your provider
is, the maximum can be anywhere from 1.5 to 10 MB. So when you want to
send really big files, what can you do? If you and the the person you are
corresponding with are tech savvy, you can always use FTP (File Transfer
Protocol).
But if you just want to rely on email, the WHALEMAIL website comes in handy... UP TO 75MB!

PRESS THE PRTSCN KEY TO PRINT SCREEN?
The Print Screen (PrtScn) key on your keyboard sends the current screen to the CLIIPBOARD (NOT TO THE PRINTER, as one would expect). So to print the contents of the Clipboard, you'll need to use a separate application, such as PAINT.
Open Paint--select Start, Programs, Accessories, Paint--select Edit, Paste, and if you see a message stating that the image is larger than the current bitmap, click Yes to confirm that you'd like it to enlarge the bitmap.
The image on the Clipboard now appears on screen. From there, you can use Paint's Print command to print the screen.
(Tip-in-a-tip: If you're printing an entire screen, switch to Landscape mode first--select File, Page Setup, select Landscape, and click OK--so the image will fit on a standard letter-size page.)
(Another tip-in-a-tip: Hold down Alt as you press Print Screen to send
only the currently active window to the Clipboard.)

TEST YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION SECURITY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Permanent connections such as DSL or cable use stable IP addresses
which are easy targets for hackers/crackers to use, sometimes for fun,
and sometimes to stage further break-ins.
Automated scan tools can quickly pass over an entire domain, and report on machines that appear to be insecure. Even unsophisticated computer users can scan 1000s of machines in an evening for simple configuration mistakes.
Test your connection! You can do so for free here:
http://www.secure-me.net/
Remember kids, play it safe on the net. Don't trust internet fairy tales. Especially those scam letters from Nigeria which are popping up everywhere.
Scan for virii and verify your emails here:
THE PUNCH LINE
THERE ONCE WAS...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Thanks Mike!]
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire
to become one of the world's great writers.
When asked to define "great" he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"
He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.
