Y2K

The problem with Y2K, and the reason that successes are NOT being reported is that a successful remediation program makes a boring headline: Nothing Happened. You see headlines like "Y2K Could Cost Hospital Patients' Lives" despite the fact that we've entered Year 1999 (when many computer applications look ahead into 2000 for the first time) without major glitches. We have successful booking of global airline travel in 2000, the beginning of Fiscal 1999 for the federal governments and states, and so on. Y2K, as a problem being resolved, ain't much of a lead story.

Then again, if you think Y2K problems end January 1, 2000, think again. Only about 10% of computer software problems will occur in the 2 weeks surrounding Jan. 1. Many businesses won't recognize the problem until later in the year. Y2K failures are still possible on these dates:
+ Jan 31, 2000: computers generate first month-end reports
+ Feb 29, 2000: Lead day could cause confusion in programs
+ Mar 31, 2000: computers generate first quarter-end reports
+ July 31, 2000: some companies begin fiscal 2000
+ Dec 31, 2000: computers generate first year-end reports

Y2K Shmy2K, it's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. How about you? So you want to get ready for "THE END"? How about some energy self sufficiency? Even if Y2K fizzles and doesn't shut down your power, you'll can still save on energy bills and help reduce pollution.

Check out IPSE, an electronic primer on passive solar architecture. IPSE is a shareware tool aimed at training architects and students, so anyone can understand it. For the more technically inclined, use SolArch, an architectural design tool to add passive solar elements to your home and reduce energy consumption. Both are designed by Kahl Consultants and now available for free downloading at:

MAXIMUM MAXIMIZING
--------------------------------
Attention Windows 95 and 98 users! Know how to switch a window from maximized to partial view? It's that middle caption button, right? You know, the button showing two overlapping rectangles in the upper right corner of any open window that toggles the current window between the maximized and partial screen view? But that sucker is tiny!

Next time, try the TITLE BAR. Believe it or not, that huge area across the top of a window performs the exact same function. Double-click it to expand a partial-screen window to maximum size; double-click it again to reshrink the window. So why did Microsoft even bother with that tiny little button? Anyone?

SURFING SOUNDS
-----------------------
Wanna make sure you won't send that deafening modem dial-up screech through the entire house or office? Silence your modem speaker!  Open the Windows 95/98 Control Panel (START > SETTINGS > Control Panel) and double-click Modems. Select your modem, click Properties, and move the lever under Speaker volume all the way left to None. Click OK and from now on, regardless of how the volume on the modem itself is set, that modem won't make a peep. (Note: Not all modems support this setting.)

KEYBOARD SHORTCUT DU JOUR

If your keyboard has a Windows key (next to the space bar), simply press Windows-Pause. Windows-Pause leads you straight to your system properties. OK, without touching the mouse, try it!

!!HOAX & VIRUS ALERT!!

EMAIL VIRUS
-----------------
CIH, Chernobly, Melissa... Many of you asked what you need to do to avoid getting a virus via email. It's quite simple: you CANNOT get a virus JUST from reading an email. You CAN get a virus from an email attachment. Email viruses normally are sent as attachments to email messages. Friends may send you infected attachments unknowingly; others could try to trick you into opening the attachment ("click here for a really good time").

Rule of Thumb #42:
Do not click, open, or execute ANY email attachments that you are unsure about!!!
