WORD OF THE MONTH

BROADBAND

Broadband refers to a high-speed, high-capacity transmission channel.

Broadband channels are carried on coaxial or fiber-optic cables that have a wider BANDWIDTH than conventional telephone lines, giving them the ability to carry video, voice, and data simultaneously. Cable TV and the -@-Home network are examples of broadband connectivity.

AOTM (Acronym of the Month)
SSL

SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer. Um... what kinda layer? SSL is a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the net. Why should you care?

SSL works by using a PRIVATE KEY to ENCRYPT data that's transferred over the SSL connection. Browsers support SSL and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain CONFIDENTIAL USER INFO, such as CREDIT CARD numbers. By convention, Web pages that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:. So think of "SSL" as a techie way of saying "SAFE"!

!!Hoax & Virus Alert!!

HONESTLY, I LOVE YOU

The media sure had a field day with the "Love Bug"! But let's not forget that nobody got hurt if they DID NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS that they didn't ask for. And it only affected those of us using PCs (not Macs!) and Microsoft Outlook Email software (not Netscape!). The media also made outlandish claims about the "damage" done by this virus.

Calm down kids! Avoid the hype and hysteria. Remember that most WARNINGS are FAKE! When a real virus does enter your computer it got there because YOU LET IT IN. Either as an email attachment or via some software you installed. Relax, even if you goofed, you can delete it with ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE.

BOTTOM LINE:
Keep a CURRENT set of BACKUPS as your first line of defense; use antivirus software as a second line of defense. And please follow the GOLDEN RULE - DON'T OPEN AN EMAIL ATTACHMENT YOU DIDN'T ASK FOR!!!

Any ways, another good laugh. I love you too.

If you receive an attachment or message or warning you want to check up on, verify it at the KC Virus & Hoax Alert site:

SMALL BUSINESS? GO ONLINE FREE!

Our mission here at Kahl Consultants is to help SMALL BUSINESSES COMPETE. Some businesses are soooo small that they cannot even afford to hire someone like us to design and maintain their website. At the risk of LOSING THOSE CUSTOMERS we'd like to tell you about free (and almost free) e-commerce for the masses.

Let's cut to the chase - check out these three sites to see what we are talking about:
http://www.freemerchant.com
http://www.bigstep.com
http://www.econgo.com

Presto! The possibility of creating your dream store is within reach.  These are great sites for starting your first online business. What do you get for free? Be forewarned, that even if you patiently design a free site using on of these services, your site won't magically be listed on directories and search engines. Customers won't materialize out of nowhere.

Nevertheless just give it a try! If after a few months of using the free site you want to upgrade then try one of these 5 "not quite free" e-commerce site providers.

http://www.amazon.com
Amazon.com ZShops are priced for widespread adoption at $9.99 per month for up to 3,000 listings, with transaction fees varying.  Your store gets integrated into Amazon's directory structure.  But your site can quickly become part of a flea market, where there is little control of how your site looks and the companies surrounding it.

http://www.buyitonline.com
Buyitonline.com costs $79 per month plus 15% of each transaction for unlimited items. Despite needing to use Online Merchant software to create a store, there is space in a virtual mall where you can create your own identity.  This is one of the better for-pay e-commerce sites for getting started.

http://www.icat.com
The iCAT Web Store is a division of Intel.  Priced at $49.95 per month for up to 50 items or $500 per year, this site has easy-to-use store-building tools and multiple reporting options, yet has no inventory tracking. What you lose in creativity for defining your site you get in reliability and a wealth of e-commerce transaction features.

http://www.storesense.com/
Kurant's offering sells for $149 per month for up to 50 items.  It has editable HTML templates, inventory and customer management tools and a structure which makes it possible for your site to grow as your business grows. The only downsides are that you will need to devote some time to getting your site running on these tools because they are complex and the price is high.  It's worth a look though if you are going to be spending for an e-commerce site.

http://www.yahoo.com
All the other companies in this category started out emulating the Yahoo Store concept.  At $100 per month for up to 50 items, Yahoo Stores is pricey yet does not offer inventory tracking.  Their flexibility of site definition is tough to beat.  If you already have a business and want to get a store online quickly, and can afford the price, consider Yahoo.  Co-promoting with Yahoo is also possible.
