KC News 8/99  Water Special

Vol.1, No.8

It's a hot summer here in California. A lot of activities center around water this time of year. A day at the beach. Fresh lemonade. Sprinklers dancing in every garden. Swimming, sailing,
skinny dipping in your favorite watering hole.

We are reminded how central water really is in our lives. As you settle in your chair and read these words remember to use water appropriately.

Y2K

No, no ridiculous tie-in between water and the Y2K bug.

Let's just look at the lighter side of Y2K. So what if machines with microchips stop working, right? Wrong! But since we hope that all our readers have started to take Y2K seriously, why not stop and laugh at a problem? That must be the idea behind the DUH-2000 web site:
http://www.duh-2000.com

Here is a gem from their collection:
From Nextel's Year 2000 Frequently Asked Questions web page:
"At midnight on December 31, 1999, if my phone does not work, is there a number I can call?"
We're not making this up.  It's number 10 on their list.

What?? You say you haven't given the Y2K bug any thought? Well if you want to test your own PC for compatibility feel free to try one of the TEST PROCEDURES described here:

Water of Love
----------------
Water of Love, deep in the ground.
But there ain't no water here to be found.
Someday baby when the river runs free,
It's gonna carry that water of love to me.
[from "Water of Love" by Dire Straits]

I hope that river is a common river of dreams. To compel us to learn about our water, to respect it and use it wisely.

MP3? What's This MP3 Thing?
-----------------------------------
In case you haven't heard, MP3 is a new format for audio that has caught the web by storm.
Everywhere you look on the net somebody is offering MP3 files.

MP3 is one of 3 audio coding schemes by MPEG, which is a popular digital audio/video compression technique. DVD movies are stored in MPEG.

Why is MP3 so popular? Well one reason is that it is a streaming format (like RealPlayer). You can go to a web site, click a link, and listen to music right there. Or you can download MP3 files
and play them back using your computer or one of the several MP3 players that have hit the market.

The secret to MP3s success is it's high compression ratio while maintaining highest quality reproduction. MP3s compression ratio is about 11 to 1. One minute of CD quality music takes
over 10 MB of disk space. With MP3 it only takes up 1 MB or less.

Curious? Then try sites like these:

Now a pop quiz: what is D.A.M.? Clueless? We'll give you the answer next month.

!!Hoax & Virus Alert!!

Malicious Web Applets?
----------------------------
Is there such a thing as a Web virus? Not one case of Web infection has been recorded, though hackers have proved it's possible to create a "malicious" applet that crashes your system or
causes data loss.

Java, the popular Web applet language, is extremely secure. It can't access critical system areas. ActiveX controls (used with Microsoft Internet Explorer - MS IE), on the other hand, can gain
access to your hard disk and wreak havoc. They are not as widespread as Java programs.

Still, it's conceivable you might run into a malicious applet. And if you do, you probably won't know that you've been infected until it's too late. Web applets run behind the scenes while you
visit a Web site that contains them. Unlike with traditional viruses you can't protect yourself against them (say, by never downloading any files).

Safety Measures:
1) Use the latest version of your browser and e-mail software (this keeps all known security
holes plugged).
2) Some people disable Java and Javascript in their browsers as an additional safety precaution; but because Java is a secure environment, that isn't necessary.
3) Configure MS IE to exercise different levels of caution when downloading Active X applets;
Select View, Internet Options and click the Security tab. For the Internet Zone, set the security level to medium or high. At the high setting, IE will not permit you to download any uncertified
controls.

THE PUNCH LINE

ANTIVIRUS COMPANY GOT HACKED
------------------------------------------------
Symantec, a leading provider of antivirus software (Norton Antivirus) had its website hacked.
The FBI has begun an investigation. Visitors to www.symantec.com found a page claiming that a group of five crackers had infiltrated Symantec's servers with a virus called bloworm. But the whole thing was just an embarrassing hoax and there was no risk of infection to anyone visiting the website. Even the CIA has fallen prey to malicious attacks like these.
