TIP OF THE MONTH

Free Internet Is Here
------------------------
AltaVista FreeAccess now offers completely free internet access to anyone. What's the catch? Well, as long as you don't mind giving away some of your personal information and reading some ads in an ad banner window while you surf, there really is none.

The choice is yours - pay monthly or get free internet with a little loss of privacy. Personally, I think my privacy is worth a monthly fee, but if you don't, here's the details:

DAM It, So What Does D.A.M. Mean?
-------------------------------------------
Last month we explained the new popular MP3 audio format. And we asked you if you had heard of D.A.M. So what is DAM?

DAM is Digital Automatic Music. It is a new way to sell CDs that contains songs in both MP3 and stardard CD audio format. So you can play them on your stereo and on your computer.

Keyboard Shortcut Du Jour

StickyKeys
Windows
We've been telling you for months that using a keyboard instead of a mouse is more efficient. But some folks need a little help typing. So if you are using Windows 95 or 98, try StickyKeys!

Tired of stretching your hands from one end of the keyboard to the other to reach those oft-used keyboard shortcuts (such as Ctrl-Alt-Delete)? Turn on StickyKeys, and you can press these same combos with a single finger--ONE KEY AT A TIME!

- Open the Control Panel (Start - Settings - Control Panel)
- Click Accessibility Options
- select Use StickyKeys

Test it: press the Ctrl key, then the Alt key, then the Delete key. Presto, the Close Program box opens. Turn StickyKeys off by pressing Shift five times. Turn it back on by pressing Shift five times, then press Enter. Practice!

!!Hoax & Virus Alert!!

Chip Scams
-------------
Your PC may be hotter than you think. Stolen and counterfeit chips are on the rise--and you could already be a victim.

True scenario: Fremont, California. Four masked and heavily armed men approach a small, nondescript building. Their target: a manufacturer and distributor of computer memory and components.

Sound like NYPD Blue? This type of high-tech robbery happens all the time. Such crimes cost companies more than a million dollars a day in Silicon Valley alone.

Technology firms aren't the only losers. Thieves sell the goods to consumers via the gray market. Other crooks work more subtly: They buy cheap CPUs, doctor them (or the motherboards they're connected to) to run at higher-than-rated speeds (a process called overclocking), re-mark them to look like the real thing, and sell them to unsuspecting customers. You may be using one in your PC without knowing it. Re-marked CPUs are unpredictable--they might work, they might not. Such a processor could be DOA, or only buckle under heavy use, taking your data with it.

If you shop at a swap meet, an online auction, a little-known mail-order company, or a local computer shop--your chances of encountering the gray market increase. You may first discover that your product is stolen when you call the company for technical support or warranty repair and are asked for a serial number. Often, the only indication that you may have a stolen CPU is a price that seems too good to be true--but even that's not always the case.

So if you're hunting for bargains, be cautious. Before you get too excited about a seemingly great deal, take a hard look at just how much money you'll be saving.

THE PUNCH LINE

NO SEX = MONEY
This week Ford Motor Co. agreed to make enforcement of sexual harassment policies a criteria in their supervisor evaluations. This comes as part of the company's $7.5 million sexual-harassment settlement. Supervisors across America take note: How well you promote and enforce your company's sexual-harassment policy could soon impact whether you get that next raise or promotion!
