San Rafael Church

The Mission San Rafael Arcángel is 200 years old in December 2017!

On December 14, 1817, priests from Mission San Francisco de Asís (aka Mission Dolores) traveled across the Golden Gate to the area where the city of San Rafael is now located. Here they found a “healing station,” or hospital for native converts.

There's a lot more to the history of this second to last mission (the last one was built in the town of Sonoma).

It's not often we get to celebrate bicentennials here in the new world. If you don't know the story of Catholic Missions in California this is a good time to catch up as we mark two centuries of Spanish colonial influence right here in Marin County.
