Kahl Consultants Tips for Stronger Passwords

Every year the first Thursday in May is Password Day! It's a reminder of how important protecting your online accounts with strong passwords is. With hacking and cybercrimes, password security has never been more important. Please use these tips for creating stronger passwords and better security:

Why is there a Password Day?

In addition to financial cost, data breaches can result in reputational damage, loss of customer trust, and legal liabilities. Passwords are often the first line of defense against cybercrime.

Stronger Passwords and Better Security

  1. Unique passwords for each account: Using the same password for multiple accounts increases the risk of a data breach. If a hacker gains access to one account, they can easily access your other accounts. Using unique passwords for each account reduces this risk.
  2. Mix up characters: A strong password should include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid common words, phrases, or personal information that can be guessed.
  3. Password manager: Use a software tool that securely stores passwords and helps generate strong passwords. Password managers help you organize and manage passwords across devices. We recommend KeePass.
  4. Two-factor authentication: adds an extra layer of security to online accounts by requiring a second form of ID, such as a one-time code to your phone.
  5. Regularly update passwords: Update your passwords, not just after a breach or suspected compromise. Passwords should be updated at least every six months.
