Contact Credit Bureaus
Contact the top 3 credit reporting companies:
Ask to be removed from their mailing list.
These 3 companies have a toll-free number:
1-888 5-OPT OUT
(1-888 5 678-688)
This is a must!
Call this phone number - it is maintained by the 3 major credit reporting companies.
Your decision to remove your name from this list is shared among the 3.
Call and you will get 2 opt out choices:
You WILL be asked for your SSN here. Go ahead and give it because it will ensure that your data gets processed within a week.
Q & A:
Q: I was advised to send letters to the companies on your site, and also to the three credit bureaus. Should I include my social security number (SSN)?
A: Generally the answer is NO. Never automatically give anyone your SSN - unless they try to torture you. :-)
One exception is for the toll-free OPT OUT service described on the left.
The 3 big credit bureaus already have your SSN - and probably know more about you than your momma.
Send your full name and address and they should be able to find you in their database (unless you move a lot). They have toll free numbersand websites.
Results:
Most companies wrote back with confirmations that our information was being deleted from their databases.
We have noticed a marked decrease in the receipt of junk mail and telemarketing calls at our home.
Do not sign up for "free" items. Do not fill out product info cards that request personal information not related to the product purchased. This will keep mail and calls to a minimum.
Thank you for your assistance in our goal of reducing junk mail and telemarketing calls.
Note: thanks to Jim Ankrom for sharing this with us.
